Akron Beacon Journal
Tower
FCE provides project planning,
custom fabrication and on site construction . . . |
|

 |
The Akron Beacon Journal wanted a tower
fabricated and erected quickly and economically to replace their old
rotating sign that was near collapse. They wanted the new tower to include
the latest high tech graphics panels while keeping with the art deco design
style that the building was originally created in. |
| Forest City Erectors, Inc. (FCE)
was tasked with removing the old tower and developing a plan to build the
new tower. FCE recommended the application of custom made fiberglass panels
supported by a structural steel frame that FCE would fabricate. This custom
built frame would also include Daktronics display panels, lighting brackets
and accommodate internal access for the service and maintenance of various
components. FCE took charge of the planning and coordinated the details with
help from several of their experienced subcontractors. |
| Forest City Erectors promptly
removed the old rotating sign, and then aided the general contractor in
first repairing and then modifying the existing structure to receive the new
tower units. In short order FCE fabricated the unique two part steel frame
work in their facility in Twinsburg, Ohio and then trucked the fabricated
steel frame work sections to the job site. |
| Next, Forest City Erectors
assembled the components onto the framework sections and then carefully
hoisted the two completed tower sections, one at a time, into position on
top of the Akron Beacon Journal building. |
| In less than 7 months from
concept to completion, the tower is now a handsome new focal point for
downtown Akron, Ohio. |
